"The Case of the Missing Numbers"

On Friday, some of our pink room friends started an investigation. Before winter break some friends noticed an echo in the boys and girls bathroom in the hallway. During a discussion at our meeting, a friend wondered how many other rooms in our school had an echo? Another friend asked, how many rooms are there in our school? One friend in our group said, he knows there are 11 rooms in our school because of the numbers on the wall. Well we had to go and check it out!

Our friends shared their findings at our meeting. One friend asked, what number is the gym? Oops, we didn't go that way! We also found out there was another hall we missed.
Today a small group went to check the number on the gym and to see the other hallway.
"The gym doesn't have a number."-EP
Down the hallway we missed, friends noticed more numbers but something was missing!
"What, where is 12 & 13?"- AB
"It's missing."- All

"Let's put the thermometers in the water!"

Lately the Pink Room has been very interested in melting ice and other things. These discussions have led us to questions and conversation about temperature, as well as what tools are used to measure temperature. Today, different materials were set out to see what we know, and what we could learn about measuring temperature. After observing what was available, friends decided to put the thermometers in the water to check their temperatures.

"Maybe this one's the coldest. Really high numbers means it's hot, and really low numbers means it's cold." -Eli

"But the line's not up! That's the cold water." -Nora
"This line went up to 100! That means it's on hot temperature." -Trinity

"So the warm is 60." -Eli
"I can write that number." -Melody

"This one's up to 100!" Harvey

"It makes the red go up, and the temperature goes up!" Henry

"Mine isn't hot or cold. It's just medium." -Ellie

"They are changing!" -Nolan

"Look! It's hot!" -Jayden

"What happens if it gets up to here?" -Landon

"When the line is down, I put my hand in there and it was cold." -Daisy

We are anxious to see how our learning about temperature moves forward!

"The ice is so strong!"

Today, a small group went to the kitchen to expand on an exploration that began last week during small capers.
When we arrived to the kitchen, the group found that several of our loose materials were stuck inside large ice cubes.

"They're freezing in the ice! The ice is so strong!" -Jake
"If we melt it, we can get to them." -Anna

But how are we going to melt these large ice cubes?
"I'm going to break it with my strong muscles!" -Jake

Well, that doesn't seem to work. And it hurts our hands!
"We can use the blow dryer! The air will melt it because it's hot!" -Anna

"If all of the ice melts, it can get out!" -Savannah

Other friends still wanted to pursue hitting the ice cubes to try to break them.
"Now try to break it with a spoon!" -Kingston
"What if I break it in half?" -Jake
"It's so cold!" -Jayden

While this idea seemed to work well, friends soon discovered that some of our loose materials were breaking with the ice.  What else can we try?
"I can pour water on it!" -Kingston
"Hot water." -Jake

With hard work and persistence, eventually all of our loose materials were retrieved from the "strong" ice.

Creating Castles

"Wa-lah, my castle's complete!" TPW

Discovering new ways to melt ice!

Today, a small group went to the kitchen to test some new theories on melting ice using salt.
"The salt is hot and that means it's going to melt the ice." - Nolan
"It's popping! The salt is popping." - Nora
"The salt is vibrating in the ice."
"The salt is melting the ice." - Jake
"If you break it, it will melt faster." - Nolan
"The ice is kind of cracking. I think it's too much ice that's why not melting." - Avery
"If we wait 100 minutes, then the ice will melt." -Avery
About an hour later, we checked on the ice to find out that it had almost all melted!
