Lemon Volcanoes!

"What?! Lemons?!" This morning a group of friends headed to the kitchen to do an experiment. We cut a little hole in the top of two lemons and added liquid watercolors, a drop of dish soap, and baking soda. Friends used droppers to squirt lemon juice on top. What happened next?
"It's erupting!!!"
"It's a volcano!"

"The red looks like hot lava; but of course it's not hot!"

Maple and Sycamore Rooms

This morning our class met up with sycamore room and went on a walk around the neighborhood. It was such a beautiful day, we just had to get outside!
"Something must be wrong with that tree."
"Why?"
"Because those men are doing work to it."
We found ourselves at the Bird Sanctuary and though we couldn't go into the forest, we had a great time racing up the hills and rolling back down.

We found stones and rocks to add to our collection and enjoyed climbing tree's with friends!

Hot Lava

Since a conversation that came up last week about volcanoes, friends have been showing a lot interest in volcanoes. A few friends spent the morning investigating a "lava rock" in our room that they believe has "dried lava" in it.
"This came off a volcano. If it's not on the volcano it dries."
"This is an ice volcano. The water goes into the deep sea and freezes."
"But hot lava has a bottom that keeps the lava hot."

Other friends used big blocks to create a home for the kitties.
"My name is Sprinkles, meow!"
"I'm Catboy."

"I'm taller than that, let's see...3, 6!"

Creating at Capers

"Look how many tall this is!"

Many friends continued a projected that begun yesterday. When nothing was out on the carpet, majority of the class gathered there together to "play family". They created beds, cribs, TVs, bottles, etc. They also assigned roles and acted out their part.
This is another crib being built.

An elevator...
"The people go in here when the door opens and it goes up and down."

If it took 14 cups to fill our container yesterday, how many drops does it take to fill up a lid?
"One, two, three...This one took 26 drops."
"What do you think will happen if I pour the water in here in this cap?"
"It overflowed because this one is smaller."

Making Predictions

Last week we noticed many conversations bubbling up as friends explored how many cups of water it would take to fill up their container. Today we worked together as a class to figure it out!

We made predictions-

Then got to work pouring-

Friends counted as every cup was poured into the container. Don't forget to ask your child, how many cups of water it took to fill it up?

We had a pitcher in our classroom and wondered if we could pour all the water from the container into the pitcher. Will it all fit? Would there be water all over our floor? Friends were very curious about it.
"It will spill over!"
"No way, all the water fit."
"But that one is shorter!"
"How did that happen?"
"This one is tall and skinny and the other one is short and fat."
I guess we have a little more investigating to do!!

"I have a smile. I'm happy."

This morning we began creating self portraits. Friends noticed a lot of details as they looked at themselves in the mirror.

"This little line is my zipper!"

"I have a smile. I'm happy."

"One braid, two braids, three braids, four braids..."

"Nike. My Nike shirt is my favorite, it's long sleeves."

"These are my glasses."

"I'm the author and the illustrator!"

Many friends became authors this morning as they created their own stories.
"A Princess Hand"
"It's by me, I'm the author."

"All About Monkeys"
"On this page, the dog and the monkey met at the drinking fountain."

"Look at my book about a duck. It swims in the water and says quack quack."

"Power Rangers Fighting"

"I'm the author and the illustrator!"
"Walking a dog. Hanging in the grass."

"It's called 'Studentality'; that's a made up word because there's a dog in the story named Nality and she's a student."
"I'm not sure where authors write their books....maybe a library because that's where you find books."

Some friends read their books to each other.

Friends were very proud to read their books to the whole class!

Enjoy your long weekends:)
