"We Can Use a Measurer"

After working with clay the past couple of days a friend was asked, "How big is your clay volcano?" "How would you find out? What could you use?" It didn't take friends long before someone said a "Measurer or Ruler." Today, friends used rulers to measure how tall their clay structures were and wrote down their results.

 "My volcano is three inches."-TB
 "Where is the two?"- JW
 "Mine is one inch."- AY
"I think mine is the tallest."- EW
"How do you write one and a half?"
"My volcano is one and a half inches."- KL
 "Yep, about three inches."- AH
"I'll write my three right here."- SH

A Morning in Maple

Friends were busy this morning building, working with clay, and  working together to create marble paintings. It took a lot of negotiation, conversation, and persistence to make the marbles move the paint!
 "The small ones go faster!"

 "They're stuck!"
 "Woah, that's cool!"

Friends created the islands from the movie Moana.
 "Are the islands in Hawaii?"
There has been many discussions about where volcanoes are. We are continuing to investigate.

We love reading your sweet notes after lunch every afternoon! Friends are so excited to hear their notes and share with friends. Every once in awhile a question is posed that sparks curiosity. I'm sure you all know, Maple Room's journey this year has involved a lot of exploration of fruits and vegetables; so friends were excited by the question, "What is your favorite fruit or vegetable?".
Many of our friends have similar taste...especially corn! Ms. Akeba shared that greens are her favorite and many friends had not had them before. "You mean green beans?"
We can't wait to do some further investigating!

Clay Volcanoes

Our Maple Room friends are really into volcanoes here lately! We are learning a lot about hot lava, eruptions, and where we might find volcanoes. Today, we had clay available for those wanting to make a volcano or just explore through the language of clay.

"What kind of volcano are you making?"-MD
"A top secret volcano."- AH
"You know when an earthquake comes, the top of the volcano burst out hot lava."-AH
"Well when volcanoes erupt it can cause earthquakes."-MD
"If your clay gets a crack in it all you have to do is, get a little piece of clay and spread it over the crack."- AY

"My volcano has a name, it's called Eruptical!"-AH

"I made two volcanoes and connected them together."- EW

Create. Explore. Imagine.

This morning we took our play outside! We took in the fresh air while running, creating, imagining, exploring, and investigating.

Friends found many treasures! Rocks, seeds, sticks, and "crystals" were some of the findings used to create with.

"Want some chocolate?"
....
"Tricked ya! It's mud!"

"I made a robot!"

Have a wonderful weekend!

Mini Eruptions!

During small capers today, friends explored in the Maple Room with colored vinegar, baking soda, and dish soap making mini eruptions for all to see!!

Friends played in the sensory table with colored soapy water and scoops.

                                                           "It's hot lava in here."
"I know, hot lava is red."
                                                           "Watch out it's overflowing!"

We also made prints using sea shells with playdough.

"It's Like a Volcano Statue!"

A group of friends worked in the classroom with blocks and other materials to create a volcano. They used a book about volcanoes to look at as a reference during the construction phase.

"There needs to be a hole in the middle."
"It's like a volcano statue."
"One part broke, we need a little more tape."
"This is my tool to get things to go down, it's called a banger."

Once their volcano was finished, some friends chose to draw pictures of the beautiful structure!
